Going Viral!!

By now, everyone knows the phrase,  “Going Viral” and what it means in a reflection of internet marketing and exposure. In the recent months and years we’ve seen trends, videos, songs and games that blow up digitally like the Harlem Shake, Gangnam Style, or Flappy Bird, but what causes this? Every day individuals and companies want to release content that will go viral and in turn develop sales and brand recognition. Here is a list of factors that can cause viral content.

1. Give Viral Marketing a Target

- Making content go viral doesn’t mean mass marketing, it means starting as you would with all other aspects of business, focusing on your target. Present your content to sources that you know will have interest in sharing your content with their following and talking about it. No matter how good the content is, if the people you share with aren’t interested then it will not go anywhere.

2. Provide Value

- Viral marketing content almost always provides value to the viewer. Whether its a how to guide, funny video, informative talk, or song that touches people emotionally, the consumer of the content perceives value from what they are watching and sharing. In 2013, the Harlem Shake made people around the world laugh, create their own and want to share.

3. Topic Choice

- In the modern digital world, content flies around the internet faster then the consumer can see. To produce viral content, your topic is a major part. Recently in Canada right now, there are tons of viral marketing topics that have articles being shared at large. Medical Marijuana Laws, WestJet Chrismas or The Selfie.

4. Plain Old Luck

- No matter how great your viral marketing, target audience or content, the process of going viral takes luck. So when putting out content, follow your strategy, cross your fingers and hope for the best viral marketing results possible!
